The Fabrication Shop Laborer supports fabrication operations by assisting with material handling, cutting preparation, equipment setup, and general shop duties. This position plays a key role in maintaining production efficiency and ensuring a safe and organized work environment in a steel pipe and valve fabrication facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist pipe fitters, welders, and machinists with fabrication tasks.
- Load, unload, and move steel pipe, fittings, and valves using forklifts, cranes, or other material‑handling equipment.
- Prepare pipe and fittings for fabrication including cleaning, grinding, bevel preparation, and layout assistance.
- Operate basic fabrication equipment such as band saws, pipe cutting machines, grinders, and deburring tools.
- Stage materials and components for fabrication orders.
- Assist with shop organization and maintain clean work areas.
- Support quality control processes by verifying materials, tags, and job numbers.
- Assist in packaging and preparing completed fabricated products for shipment.
- Follow all company safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Perform other shop duties as assigned by supervisors.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in a fabrication, manufacturing, or industrial shop environment preferred.
- Ability to read tape measures and basic shop drawings.
- Ability to safely operate forklifts and overhead cranes (training may be provided).
- Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand tools.
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs.
- Ability to stand for long periods and work in an industrial shop environment.
- Ability to work around steel fabrication equipment and machinery.
- Experience with steel pipe fabrication or valve modification.
- Familiarity with beveling, grinding, and pipe prep.
- Experience working in natural gas or utility fabrication environments.
- Understanding material traceability and fabrication job travelers.
