Position: CRIME SCENE MANAGER, Sheriff Office

Overview

Summary The Crime Scene Manager will be responsible for assisting with the daily functions of the Sheriff’s Office including performing advanced level professional investigative duties to achieve the strategic goals of the division. Responsible for providing leadership, knowledge, and training of the Crime Scene Unit (CSU) and its operations. This is accomplished by supervising CSU staff and workload distribution; providing guidance, training and assistance to CSU team members and assisting in more complicated daily or long-term tasks;

and performing a variety of highly skilled, technical, criminal identification tasks, both in the field and in the laboratory. Other duties include management of office supplies and equipment, scheduling shifts, responding to major crime scenes to supervise and assist in Crime Scene Investigators duties, and other activities and tasks, as directed by Sheriff’s supervision.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Oversees management and administration of forensic operations.
  • Directs activities of assigned staff members, to ensure the accurate and timely collection of evidence, and its appropriate processing.
  • Performs administrative and technical reviews of reports and latent analysis completed by staff members; follows up to verify cases are completed in a timely manner.
  • Works with the Technical Lead(s) to ensure the implementation and maintenance of section policy, unit scheduling, the timely ordering of supplies, annual budget requests, compliance of statistical fingerprint submission to DPS, adherence to continuing education and certification requirements, completion of annual proficiency testing, and provide appropriate training and instruction to staff members and CSI trainees.
  • Reviews, audits, and maintains required records, files, and statistics; reviews evidence and approves submissions as needed for professional examination; approves prepared investigations and case supplements with the appropriate agencies, including law enforcement, district attorney, and hospitals.
  • Provides supervision to assigned staff member(s), assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing meaningful, timely performance feedback including annual performance evaluations.
  • Participates in the selection process of division personnel.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance to indirect reports and to other agency staff members and clients as requested.
  • Functions as On-Call Supervisor as assigned and makes decisions on response requests.
  • Performs the duties of a CSI team member as necessary including processing crime scenes, recognizing, gathering, and processing physical evidence, photographing and sketching crime scene, directing other personnel at the scene, communicating extensively with uniformed and investigative officers to determine nature and extent of crime, and sharing information with investigators. Assures that evidence is collected, transported, and stored legally and safely.

    Writes comprehensive and technically correct reports regarding the processes used, evidence discovered and importance of the evidence to the investigation, and all other CSI team members’ duties as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, work procedures, safety protocols and instructions.
  • Communicates with co-workers, management, clients, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Participates in a wide variety of special projects and compiles a variety of special reports as requested.
  • Provides critical analysis to cases and testifies in court proceedings or under deposition.
  • Instructs TCOLE mandated training necessary for law enforcement personnel.
  • Drives a county vehicle.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
