Position: LACTATION PROGRAM SUPERVISOR - WIC - Public Health

The Lactation Program supervisor will be responsible for assisting with the daily functions of Public Health department which includes supervising the peer counselors, time off request, time approval, clinic coverage, and annual appraisals. This position will provide clinical lactation support and counseling for WIC participants who are having breastfeeding concerns beyond the scope of the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor or Nutritionist’s skill levels.

This position will also provide breastfeeding training to WIC employees and other health care professionals, as well as promote lactation support within the community. This position also acts as a Certifying Authority for the WIC Program.

  • Supervise peer counselors including time approval, annual appraisals, and clinic coverage.
  • Complete approximately 100 referrals per month. This includes referrals for High-Risk codes (602-breastfeeding complications for women, 603-breastfeeding complications for infants, 141B-very low birth weight, 134-failure to thrive, 135-slowed/faltering growth pattern) and referrals for breastfed babies who were born preterm.
  • Promote and support breastfeeding in the community by networking with and providing outreach to other health professionals, community organizations and stakeholders to inform them of WIC breastfeeding resources.
  • Provide lactation counseling to participants referred by breastfeeding peer counselors or certifying authorities when breastfeeding issues are out of scope of practice or are not resolved within 24 hours of initial contact.
  • Perform nutritional assessments for WIC participants through weighing and measuring, lab work, diet assessment, and health history.
  • Facilitate group breastfeeding classes and/or support groups in WIC clinics and the community.
  • Provide breastfeeding training and technical breastfeeding support to breastfeeding peer counselors, WIC professional staff, and community health care providers.
  • Complete program audits to include annual evaluation of BF education, local agency breastfeeding rates in the Texas MIS system, breast pump distribution.
  • Manage breastfeeding referral protocol, client breastfeeding resource, breast pump inventory, and other protocols as assigned to keep them up to date.
  • Ensure that breastfeeding lessons, materials, and other information presented to WIC participants are accurate, current, culturally appropriate and evidence based.
  • Performs all other related duties involved in the operation of the Public Health Department as required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Expert organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Competency with computers and Microsoft Office 365 Suite.
  • Advanced analytical skills.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, Dietetics or Home Economics with a minimum of 24 hours in food and nutrition.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience, including a minimum of two (2) years WIC experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • IBCLC Certification by International Board of Lactation Consultants.
  • Class C driver’s license with the ability to drive throughout Tarrant County.
  • Completion of all required WIC modules during the probationary period.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking skills preferred.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent may be required to bend, hear, keyboard, sit, stand, talk, work alone and with others, and work overtime. Must be able to lift up to 25lbs.

Travel required, using personal vehicle. Work hours are Mon-Fri 9am-6pm. One Saturday a month 8am-5pm
