Job Summary

The Trauma Nurse Clinician (TNC) delivers quality patient care through assessment, planning, direction, and implementation using the nursing process. The TNC directs care for licensed and ancillary personnel, manages a caseload of trauma patients, and implements quality management protocols to minimize complications and maximize patient safety.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities
  • Collaborates with physicians, advanced practitioners, and other health‑care team members to facilitate quality, multidisciplinary care.
  • Delivers nursing care to assigned patients, including education, treatment planning, pain management, medication administration, and discharge planning.
  • Modifies patient treatment plans, monitors symptoms, and records changes in patient condition.
  • Performs complete data collection from patient complaints and history.
  • Collaborates with patients to identify treatment goals and discharges patients with a written plan.
  • Anticipates deteriorating vital signs or equipment malfunctions and takes appropriate action.
  • Collaborates with patient‑care team on care plans, using consistent hand‑off communication.
  • Conducts patient care and transfers in accordance with EMTALA regulations.
  • Provides trauma nursing services across the continuum of care and engages in clinical management of the defined patient population.
  • Educates clients and families, coordinates referrals, and facilitates resources based on identified needs.
  • Identifies deviations from standard care and intervenes when possible.
  • Participates in PI event initiatives and records PI events.
  • Ensures accurate trauma registry data with leadership and PI specialists.
  • Maintains timely and accurate case review, PI documentation, and projects.
  • Delivers trauma education to multidisciplinary team members.
  • Demonstrates customer service to all health‑care providers, pre‑hospital providers, outside hospitals, clients, families, and peers.
  • Maintains a safe, clean working environment in compliance with procedural rules.
  • Rounds on patients to monitor experience, care deviations, education, and clinical assistance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • If assigned to Trauma Services:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited professional nursing school.
    • RN with 3+ years of experience in an Emergency Department or Critical Care, including trauma care.
  • If assigned to ICU:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited professional nursing school.
    • RN with 5+ years in Critical Care, including trauma care.
  • For both Trauma Services and ICU:
    • Current Texas RN license or proof of reciprocity with another state.
    • Completion of unit‑specific competency orientation within 90 days.
    • Current JPS‑recognized BLS and ongoing maintenance.
    • ACLS certification.
    • TNCC provider.
    • PALS or ENPC certification.
    • ATCN provider within 1 year.
    • Professional certification (CEN, CCRN, TCRN, or similar) within 18 months.
Preferred Qualifications
  • TNCC instructor.
  • ACLS instructor.
  • ATCN instructor.
  • Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement (TOPIC) course.
  • Training in Injury Severity Scoring.
  • Experience with EMTALA regulations.
  • Advanced quality training: LEAN Six Sigma, Team STEPPS, or similar.
