Job Summary
The Academic Advisor is responsible for supporting Harris department programs by providing individual or group student advising on academic, career-related issues, programs and curriculum; assisting students in obtaining their desired academic outcomes.
Duties & Essential Job Functions- Provides academic advising services to undergraduate students by conducting individual and group counseling and advising sessions.
- Determines nature of the student’s situation by responding to inquiries, interviewing students, and auditing student records.
- Recommends a course of action by advising students on progress toward Harris College degree completion, ensuring requirements are met, providing alternate strategies for “at‑risk” students, and monitoring progress.
- Monitors planned actions and student progress/records by periodic follow‑up; receives, processes, and maintains required documents, maintains databases, provides reports, and analyzes information.
- Supports academic programs by providing student skill techniques, time‑management and related academic information; evaluates student academic abilities and skills; assists students in developing academic plans.
- Plans and implements new student orientation programs and advising activities; develops materials to enhance programs and services.
- Coordinates advising functions by serving as a liaison between students, faculty, academic departments, and other campus services.
- Serves as liaison for the school and academic departments by interpreting academic policies, procedures, and curriculum issues.
- Works closely with the Nursing department in meeting with prospective transfer Nursing students; holds Nursing workshops for students looking to apply to Traditional and Accelerated Nursing programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Two (2) years of experience advising and counseling students in higher education or a related field, including identifying students struggling academically.
- Experience working in higher education in some capacity.
Licensure/Certification /Specialized Training

- Knowledge to teach study skills and time‑management techniques.
- Knowledge of curriculum and degree requirements.
- Knowledge of university programs.
- Knowledge of customer service techniques.
- Knowledge to establish and maintain databases.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Skill in the use of People Soft or equivalent data record systems.
- Skill in effective written and verbal communication.
- Ability to interact with students.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations)- Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials.
- Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
- Hearing ability for verbal communication, conversation, responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face‑to‑face interactions.
- Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, and prolonged sitting.
- Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.
- Work is indoors, sedentary, and subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
- This role is an on‑campus, in‑person position.
- There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
- The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
