Position: Consultant in Anaesthetics
Location: Belford Hospital, Fort William
Employer: NHS Highland
Salary: £111,430 to £148,064 per annum pro rata
Responsibilities- Deliver a first-rate anaesthetic service in collaboration with the existing team of three Consultant Anaesthetists and with Medical and Surgical colleagues to serve Lochaber and surrounding areas.
- Provide 24/7 consultant cover (non-resident) including cover for A&E, supported by HDU, laboratory and radiology services.
- Manage emergency cases on site with consultant-led care; participate in resuscitation and stabilisation to enable transfer to definitive care or regional/tertiary centres.
- Contribute to teaching, training and development, and support personal and professional development of colleagues.
- Engage with opportunities for research, teaching, and network collaboration across Highland and Scotland.
- Work flexibly across sites and adapt hours and job plan as discussed with the post holder and management.
- Well-developed anaesthesia skills with excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.
- Willingness to participate in on-call arrangements; the on-call frequency is 1:4 with prospective cover and attracts an 8% supplement in line with Terms and Conditions of Service.
- Interest in teaching and research; active involvement with trainees across multiple disciplines and institutions is desirable.
The Belford Hospital features a 24/7 on-site laboratory (biochemistry, haematology, cross-match) and radiology services (including ultrasound and CT); there is a visiting echocardiography service. The role supports a range of professional development opportunities, including Scottish Rural Health Partnership networks and potential collaboration with the University of the Highlands and Islands and Aberdeen University.
Fort William is described as the outdoor capital of the UK, offering scenic surroundings and access to leisure activities. The post is offered on a seven programmed activity basis as outlined in the job plan, with the possibility to discuss flexible working patterns and part-time arrangements. There are opportunities to work across sites and to participate in research and teaching activities with local and national institutions.
