Position: Maintenance Worker I

Maintenance Worker I – Allen County War Memorial Coliseum

Essential Functions
  • Operate trucks and heavy machinery to maintain or construct roads, culverts, bridges, and drainage structures.
  • Inspect equipment and ensure proper fluid levels, tire pressure, and mechanical functionality before and after use.
  • Replace catch basins and repair field tile for water drainage purposes.
  • Provide traffic control and flagging at road construction sites.
  • Work as part of a road crew, performing asphalt repairs, mowing, vector removal, and related maintenance tasks.
  • Handle snow removal, machine repairs, brush cutting, tree removal, dead animal removal, and stump grinding.
  • Load, transport, deposit, and spread materials such as crushed stone, sand, salt, and others using trucks.
  • Operate precise electronic equipment: slope grade lasers, sondes for tile tracing, underground cameras, slope levels, and station surveying for right‑of‑way.
  • Maintain reports and records required by the County and the Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). to County, State, and Federal safety regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED; preferred one year experience in truck and heavy equipment operation.
  • Commercial Driver’s License with Class A endorsement for operating County vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of highway patching, OSHA rules for working near and around traffic, and basic roadway construction.
  • Ability to operate dump trucks, chainsaws, construction equipment and tools including loaders, bobcats, excavators, backhoes, and motor graders.
  • Working knowledge of repairing and installing water runoff systems and drainage.
  • Maintain Forklift Certification and participate in all safety training programs offered.
Performance Expectations

The Maintenance Worker I carries out moderately complex tasks involving the operation and inspection of heavy equipment, with a thorough understanding of the work process while replacing catch basins and conducting repairs on field tile for water runoff drainage.

Responsibility

The Maintenance Worker I completes duties under moderate supervision, following detailed instructions, and demonstrates caution and proficiency when operating trucks, equipment, and attachments to prioritize personal safety and the well‑being of others.

Personal Work Relationships

The Maintenance Worker I maintains regular communication with fellow County employees while performing maintenance and repairs on County highways and roads, demonstrating tact, respect, patience, and professionalism when interacting with co‑workers, the public, and outside agencies.

Working Conditions

The role involves lifting objects up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing, pulling loads, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, and crawling. Standing and sitting for extended periods, walking, exposure to temperature extremes, hazardous equipment, noise, unpleasant odors, fumes, occasional chemicals, and heavy traffic environments are common. Attention to detail and equipment monitoring are frequently required.

7:00 am – 3:30 pm – 40 hours; overtime as required or schedule changes may occur during weather events. Summer hours (Memorial Day thru Labor Day) may shift to 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the discretion of the Barn Supervisor.
