Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, the Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic maintains, diagnoses, and repairs County vehicles and heavy equipment and responds to service calls as needed. This position is Covered, as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
Responsibilities- Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains County vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Responds to service calls on the road for broken down vehicles or heavy equipment.
- Conducts electrical and mechanical repairs.
- Works on air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and hydraulic systems.
- Transports equipment and vehicles to and from worksites, as required.
- Operates heavy equipment to remove snow and ice.
- Maintains records of all vehicle and heavy equipment repairs, using descriptions of work performed and codes.
- Performs shop maintenance and ensures shop cleanliness.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
- High School Diploma or GED and specialized training in Diesel and/or Heavy Equipment repair or related field and one year Diesel and/or Heavy Equipment maintenance and repair experience.
- Ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months.
- Thorough knowledge of the accepted principles involved in gas and diesel engine repair and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of diagnostics and repair procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS).
- Knowledge of safety procedures and precautions for working with heavy equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Experience with Forklift and Bobcat operation.
- Ability to weld/solder under established safety guidelines.
The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic performs work that is complex and varied when diagnosing vehicles and heavy equipment. Thorough knowledge is needed to perform preventative maintenance and to perform proper repairs.
Responsibilities NoteThe Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic demonstrates care and skill when assisting with service calls for vehicles and heavy equipment on the road. They also recommend deviations from general instructions when necessary.
Working RelationshipsThe Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic maintains frequent contact with other County employees when completing work orders and receiving instructions.
Working ConditionsThe Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic works in a standard shop setting, involving standing, lifting up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling, reaching overhead, kneeling, some sitting, walking, and climbing ladders. The role requires mental and visual effort, along with tasks such as typing, equipment monitoring, and detailed inspection. The position may involve exposure to temperature extremes, chemicals, dangerous equipment, noise, and noxious odors/fumes, requiring frequent attention to detail.
