Under the direction of the Jail Matron, the Commissary Clerk – Picker is responsible for accurately filling and bagging inmate orders, restocking shelves, and assisting with monthly inventory. This position is not covered under the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Accurately fill and bag inmate orders to ensure timely and correct distribution.
- Restock commissary shelves to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Assist with monthly inventory counts to ensure accurate stock records.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the commissary area to support efficiency and safety.
- Follow all security protocols to ensure a safe working environment when interacting with inmates.
- Operate and maintain equipment such as barcode scanners, label printers, and computer systems for order processing.
- Perform data entry and record-keeping to ensure accurate tracking of inventory and order fulfillment.
- Communicate effectively with jail staff and supervisors to address order discrepancies or supply needs.
- Adhere to confidentiality and security guidelines related to inmate records and commissary transactions.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support commissary operations.
REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Ability to accurately perform basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Proficiency in using computers and job‑related equipment (barcode scanners, label printers, etc.)
- Strong attention to detail for accurate order filling, bagging, and inventory tracking
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, lift up to 40 pounds, and reach overhead frequently
- Effective communication skills to interact with jail staff, supervisors, and team members
- Ability to maintain professionalism when working near inmates
- Adherence to confidentiality and security protocols for inmate information and commissary operations
- Ability to work in a secure correctional facility with potential exposure to inmates who may display aggressive behavior
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS
The Commissary Clerk – Picker maintains frequent contact with law enforcement, confinement personnel and inmates of the Allen County Jail while filling orders and stocking shelves at the Allen County Jail Commissary.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The Commissary Clerk – Picker role requires frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, and reaching overhead, as well as the lifting and carrying of items up to 40 pounds. The position also involves pushing, pulling, kneeling, equipment monitoring, and repetitive tasks like typing and detailed inspections. Work is performed in a secure correctional facility, with direct interaction with inmates, some of whom may exhibit aggressive or unpredictable behavior, necessitating strict adherence to safety and security protocols.
