Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of duties concerning the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; control traffic flow; enforce local, Tribal, State and Federal regulations; issue citations; participate in and conduct a variety of criminal investigations; make arrests; provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and law enforcement programs; and perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities.
SpecificJob Duties /Responsibilities
- Demonstrate the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values.
- Abide by all policies/procedures of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and the BIA/OJS.
- Must attend training to become or sustain law enforcement certification.
- Maintain law and order within the area of assignment by patrolling, investigating suspicious activity, and taking appropriate action.
- Work with law enforcement personnel to address community concerns and evaluate community input for issue resolution.
- Organize community forums and provide community orientation on special law enforcement programs.
- Develop and implement special community and law enforcement programs as directed by the established Chain of Command.
- Assist tribal programs and tribal court on follow-up of court cases as requested.
- Respond to calls concerning felonies and misdemeanors under Tribal, State, Federal and local laws.
- Respond to emergencies such as traffic accidents, confrontations, altercations, and disorderly conduct.
- Administer first-aid, NARCAN and/or CPR when necessary.
- Determine necessary action in serious crime or personal injury traffic accidents.
- Perform duties related to radar on high traffic roadways and participate in traffic and crowd control at community events.
- Make arrests in cases of crimes and present suspects to appropriate authority.
- Testify at hearings and trials as an expert witness as required.
- Prepare statistical reports and submit daily and weekly narratives as needed.
- Diligently enforce laws and regulations related to controlled substances.
- Perform all other law enforcement related duties as assigned.
- Certified Law Enforcement Candidates preferred.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and meet driver’s eligibility requirements.
- No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
- No DUI convictions within the last 5 years.
- No domestic violence convictions or history.
- Must be of good moral and ethical character.
- Basic knowledge of radio procedures and ability to operate radio equipment.
- Must acquire and retain law enforcement officer certification.
- Must acquire and retain first-aid and CPR certification.
- Proficient in various computer software programs.
- Ability to handle situations and people with tact and respect.
- Knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures.
- Knowledge of local, Tribal, State and Federal laws.
- Knowledge of Constitutional protections and handling suspects.
- Thorough knowledge of criminal vs civil infractions.
- Ability to interpret and apply laws correctly.
- Knowledge and certification in the use of firearms.
- Maintain strict confidentiality due to access to sensitive information.
- Ability to pass a federal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- College Degree preferred.
- Willingness to pursue a training and educational plan.
- Attendance at all department training and meetings as directed.
- Completion of basic Police Academy training within the first year of employment.
- Law Enforcement Certification is required.
- Compliance with 45 CFR 1301 regarding arrests and convictions.
- Must be physically fit for duty.
- Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
- Regularly required to talk, hear, smell, and taste.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
