Position: Intern – City Engineering (Transportation & Traffic) Public Works

Intern – City Engineering (Transportation & Traffic) Public Works 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., may vary | Up to $18.50 per hour

What You'll Do

Work alongside City Engineers supporting transportation and traffic projects that improve how people move safely through Fort Wayne every day. You'll gain practical, real-world experience in design, analysis, and fieldwork while contributing to projects that directly impact the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with transportation and traffic engineering projects including planning, design, and field support
  • Collect and analyze traffic data, evaluate safety concerns, and recommend improvements
  • Support drafting, surveying, inspections, and quantity take-offs
  • Help prepare project plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and community partners to keep projects moving safely and efficiently
What You Bring | Education & Experience
  • 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year student pursuing Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Understanding of engineering principles and transportation/traffic concepts
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with teams and the public
  • Comfortable balancing office work with outdoor field assignments
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License (if operating City vehicles)
Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Familiarity with drafting/design or engineering software
  • Data collection and analysis skills
  • Working knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and applied math
  • Ability to read plans, diagrams, and technical documents
