Position: Fixture Design Engineer (Fort Wayne, IN)

Summary

Designs fixtures for fabrication of metal products to produce quality parts that meet customer specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Examine listing of open fixtures and validate current or impending need for the fixturing.
  • Determine status of open fixtures; determine labor, material, and time necessary for completion.
  • Work in conjunction with the Welding, Machining, and Forming SMEs to produce fixtures.
  • Track fixtures to completion, including quality department and customer validation with data stored in corresponding part folders.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, Pro‑E, Creo, and Solid Works to perform fixture design based on datum structure and GD&T of customer’s print requirements.
  • Provide instruction for how tooling is to be used by operations.
  • Participate in the fixture maintenance program; generate detailed list of repairs needed and participate in the completion of repairs.
  • Analyze blueprints, specifications, proposals and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for products, projects, or services.
  • Provide a response team to repair or modify tooling when safety, quality, ergonomic, or productivity issues are identified.
  • Provide quotations and technical support for customer accounts.
  • Maintain regular contact with and provide technical support to internal customers to ensure fixtures meet quality, safety and production objectives.
  • Visit tooling vendors to build relationships and broaden knowledge of product usage.
  • Answer inquiries regarding production capabilities, manufacturability of parts, and tooling issues.
  • Serve as liaison between Ottenweller Purchasing, Quality team, Production/Scheduling, Building Managers and customers.
  • Field questions and troubleshoot issues, suggest solutions; provide direct contact for production shop floor as needed.
  • Follow up and resolve contract review issues, quotations, and costing issues, including cost effectiveness, profitability, and cost‑reduction.
  • Review and update engineering changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Minimum Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent in manufacturing or engineering from a two‑year college or technical school, plus one to two years related engineering or sales experience, three to five years production experience, or an equivalent combination.
  • Ability to read and interpret customer blueprints; knowledge of geometric tolerancing and proficiency with Solid Works, AutoCAD, and Pro

  • Experience with Microsoft Project, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Language Skills
  • Read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Speak effectively and respond professionally to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Math Skills
  • Use basics of algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
Reasoning Skills
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts; draw valid conclusions.
  • Interpret extensive technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form; handle abstract and concrete variables.
Physical Demands

Frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear. Close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus are required. Occasionally required to lift up to 30 lbs; when operating equipment may be required to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. Noise level in the office is usually quiet; noise level in the shop is usually loud.
