Manufacturing Engineer
Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to assist in the design and development of new commercial thermoformed food packaging tooling, as well as to help improve and analyze existing tooling by working closely with Corporate Engineering and Manufacturing. The individual will report to the Tool Engineering Manager.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Safety- Follows all D&W Safety Rules and maintains an awareness of surroundings.
- Reports unsafe conditions or hazards and uses the proper PPE for any work being performed.
- Assist in the design of new thermoforming, injection, and foil tooling to meet D&W Fine Pack standards.
- Assist in the design of replacement and insert thermoforming, injection, and foil tooling to meet D&W Fine Pack standards.
- Work with the tooling department to continuously improve current molds to meet new design standards established by the Tool Engineering department.
- Detail and file prints as required by Tool Designer II, III and Tool Design Manager.
- Responsible for creation and maintenance of all tooling Bill of Materials.
- Generate documentation with quality inspection information with critical dimensions.
- Update and maintain the tooling standards book.
- Participate in tool inspection process at tool vendor before shipment of new production tool.
- Assist plants where required on tooling and machine repairs.
- Assist in CNC programming for internal CNC shop as needed.
- Assist in procurement of details required for fabrication and build of tooling including raw materials, cutters, and purchased details used for assembly.
- Help with inspection of internal tool builds.
- Assist in tool room as required (machining, polishing, vacuum drilling, and assembly).
- Assist in set‑up and tracking of TRP and CER projects in Job Boss and master project list.
- Maintain a safe work environment.
- Track tool design time by project.
- Provides general engineering assistance when necessary.
- Perform tasks as assigned by Tool Design Manager and other managers as directed.
Assist in the start‑up of new production tooling as required.
QualificationsTo perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
Experience:
- AS Engineering (Mechanical or Plastics preferred); or experience and/or training equivalent with education.
- 1+ years of experience with specific background working in thermoforming product and tool engineering.
- 3+ years relevant CAD experience (Solid Works and Draft Sight preferred);
Mastercam programming knowledge a plus. - 1+ year of experience in hands‑on machine shop operations; CNC set‑up experience preferred.
- Knowledge of plastic material processes and materials.
- Experience in problem solving involving product design and tooling design/debug.
- Skilled in management of large and small projects.
- Excellent computer and communication (verbal and written) skills.

The employee’s work is performed in a typical interior/office environment and is expected to maintain an organized work area and contribute to the overall decorum of a professional setting. Minimal work may require exposure to the manufacturing facility. The employee is expected to be familiar with and compliant with all plant safety and cleanliness (GMP) regulations. Workdays are generally Monday through Friday;
however, the employee is expected to work additional and weekend hours as required to fulfill job duties.
