Job Description

The instructional Assistant will support student learning using Montessori materials and district models in small group and one-on-one instruction. The successful candidate must be able to sit on the floor with students during some activities and support procedures, policies, and discipline within the classroom and building.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Preferred experience working with Montessori program.
• Counseling and computer skills helpful.
• Strong desire to see students succeed and sincere concern for youth.
• Strong ethic and ability to positively motivate students.

• Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; provide instructional support to various teachers.
• Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; answer questions, provide proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
• Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments and maintain student records and files.
• Assist teachers with implementing lesson plans; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs; explain and assure student understanding of classroom assignment and homework instructions.
• Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor students during outdoor and recess activities as required; monitor and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
• Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned by the position; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition as required; assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.
• Provide classroom support to the teacher by preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters and displays, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
• Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

• New employees must successfully complete their probationary period to be eligible to apply for posted positions.

• Current non-probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.
