Job DescriptionThe incumbent under the guidance of the Street Construction Supervisor operates equipment to accomplish what is normally too difficult to do manually both safely and efficiently. Maintain all department vehicles in good working order.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate assigned equipment.
- Pour and finish concrete.
- Distribute gravel in alleys.
- Work on asphalt crew as necessary.
- Drive concrete truck as required.
- Set concrete forms to include curb, gutter, catch basins, etc.
- Haul asphalt, run roller and rake as necessary.
- Haul off debris and dirt that has been dug out on a job.
- Subject to call‑outs after hours during bad weather conditions.
- Operate salt/sand spreader when needed (may also be after hours).
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EO in Training- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and must obtain required CDL within 9 months of hire. Must sit for written exam within 3 months of hire; must pass written exam within 6 months of hire; and must pass driving exam within 9 months of hire.
- No experience necessary. On the job training for transitioning to higher EO levels.
- May be required to operate various pieces of equipment.
This position does not have an EOI classification.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOII- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class A CDL w/air brake endorsement.
- 6 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
- May be required to operate: backhoe/loader/dump truck/concrete truck/steam roller.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class B or C CDL w/air brake endorsement upon hire. Must have or be able to obtain a valid Class A CDL w/air brake endorsement with 9 months of hire.
- 12 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
- May be required to operate above equipment plus: road grader/backhoe/lay down machine.
Skills and Abilities
The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department. Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Knowledge of carpentry and concrete finishing is beneficial.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, climb, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit; use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.
The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals as well as non-weather related extreme heat. The incumbent is also at risk of electrical shock and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
