Under the general direction of the designated supervisor, this role is responsible for mechanical repair of assigned vehicles and equipment. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Repair and/or replace defective parts.
  • Install special functional and structural parts in equipment and vehicles.
  • Mount, balance, repair and replace vehicle tires.
  • Repair electrical equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks on all City Solid Waste vehicles and equipment.
  • Clean work area, machines, tools and equipment.
  • Routine service/maintenance of Solid Waste compactors.
  • Drive motor vehicles as required.
  • Participate in on-call duty.
  • May be required to drive a motor vehicle to accomplish assigned task.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance at the workplace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Service City’s fleet vehicles and equipment, including brakes, tires, engine work, etc.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment required for the assigned task.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and personal protective equipment in the trade(s) assigned.
  • Knowledge of City and State rules, regulations and protocols.
  • Knowledge of general housekeeping practices.
  • Skilled in the efficient and safe operation of trade-specific tools and equipment.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and repair within assigned trade(s).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and necessary equipment including hand tools.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and interpretation based on acquired knowledge when standardization is limited.
  • Ability to adapt to performing under frequent deadlines and/or in emergencies.
  • Ability to receive and understand oral and written directions.
  • Ability to recognize and address common safety issues in the field.
  • Ability to detect improper functioning mechanical systems.
  • Ability to review and organize work for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ability to operate manual and power hand tools and other heavy equipment and machinery.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in fleet maintenance or vehicle related work.
Certification, License and

Special Requirements
  • Mandatory Drug/Alcohol Testing required.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possess four ASE certifications.
Physical Demands

This work typically requires the following physical activities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Work Environment
  • Tasks are performed outside, subject to weather conditions and uneven terrain, with exposure to toxic agents/chemicals, pathogens, and smoke.
  • Contact with internal and external customers, vendors and the general public.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in varying and adverse weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to moving parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
  • Must be able to work after hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies.
  • May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including on-call hours.
