Position Summary

The Carpenter is a skilled construction professional responsible for performing carpentry work and providing leadership to construction crews in building and renovating affordable homes for Habitat for Humanity. This position combines technical carpentry expertise with crew leadership responsibilities, including supervising both skilled workers and volunteers. The Carpenter ensures high-quality workmanship, maintains safety standards, and contributes to the successful completion of construction projects that advance Habitat’s mission of providing strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled carpentry work in building and renovating homes, including rough and finish carpentry.
  • Execute specialized carpentry tasks including framing, roofing, flooring, trim work, cabinet installation, and door and window installation.
  • Utilize knowledge of construction techniques, tools, materials, and building methods to ensure high-quality workmanship.
  • Read and interpret construction blueprints, drawings, and specifications to complete work accurately.
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and install structural woodwork and related materials according to specifications.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and equipment safely and efficiently to complete assigned tasks.
Crew Leadership and Supervision
  • Lead construction crews consisting of skilled workers, unskilled laborers, and volunteers on assigned projects.
  • Assign tasks to crew members based on their skills, experience, and project requirements.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and training to workers and volunteers, especially those with varying levels of construction expertise.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques and best practices to ensure crew members develop their skills and work safely.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-focused work environment that engages and motivates volunteers.
  • Monitor crew productivity and work quality, providing feedback and making adjustments as needed.
Project Coordination
  • Collaborate with project managers, Site Supervisors, and other team members to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Coordinate carpentry tasks and activities to meet project timelines and milestones.
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and material needs to supervisors and project managers.
  • Attend regular team meetings to discuss project status, address challenges, and provide updates.
  • Adapt work plans as needed to accommodate changes in project scope, weather conditions, or unexpected developments.
Quality Control and Inspection
  • Conduct regular inspections of carpentry work to ensure it meets Habitat’s quality standards and building code requirements.
  • Identify and address quality issues or defects promptly to maintain high construction standards.
  • Ensure all work complies with building codes, specifications, and Habitat for Humanity standards.
  • Make corrections or adjustments to carpentry work as needed to achieve desired results.
Safety Oversight and Compliance
  • Enforce safety protocols and OSHA regulations on construction sites to ensure a safe working environment for all crew members.
  • Provide safety training and orientation to crew members, emphasizing the importance of following safety guidelines.
  • Model safe work practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Identify and address potential safety hazards immediately, taking corrective action to prevent accidents.
  • Report any accidents, injuries, or near-miss incidents to supervisors according to established procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas to minimize safety risks.
Material and Tool Management
  • Manage and track carpentry materials, tools, and equipment assigned to the crew.
  • Coordinate the procurement and delivery of carpentry materials, ensuring supplies are available when needed.
  • Minimize material waste through efficient planning, accurate measurements, and proper handling.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition, reporting maintenance or replacement needs promptly.
  • Ensure proper storage and security of tools, materials, and equipment at job sites.
