Position: BUILDING INSPECTOR I

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: No Level II Screening: No

Under the general direction of the designated supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for the application of one or more areas of the technical codes (Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, Roofing or Structural) for the inspection of construction or plan review for structural strength, stability, lighting, ventilation, safety to life and property from fire and other hazards for public health, safety and general welfare.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation Essential Employees

Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.

Non Essential Employees

Non Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.

Building Inspector I: 010 $ 26.49-$40.07 Hr.

Building Inspector II: 011 $ 28.38-$42.92 Hr.

Building Inspector III: 012 $ 30.39-$45.96 Hr.

  • Conduct highly technical inspections and plan review for code compliance to include structural load bearing capacities, moment and shear, main wind force and wind resisting systems, anchorage, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, drain waste and vent, electrical voltage calculation, accessibility and environmental laws regulations.
  • Consult with contractors, City staff, and citizens via phone and in person.
  • Review and assign all daily inspections to appropriate staff.
  • Research Code books for compliance.
  • Performs administrative and technical research and reporting in writing and via computer.
  • Prepares written documentation, including but not limited to daily work sheet of inspections completed and sign-off on inspection records.
  • Oral and written communication of a highly technical nature when corresponding with Architects, Engineers and Contractors, pertaining to a requisite inspection or plan review.
  • Maintains assigned city vehicle and equipment.
  • This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee's physical presence at the workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledgeable in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Skill in time management and organization.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
  • Ability to effectively operate necessary equipment, including but not limited to including vehicle, ladder, telephone, radio, cell phone, digital camera, computer, printer, copier, facsimile machine and other standard office equipment.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Five years of experience in the construction, design, construction inspection field or related work; or education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
When assigned to Building Inspector I
  • A provisional license issued by the State of Florida in one of the following areas:
    Building, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical, to be determined by business need at the time of hire, or be able to obtain within ninety (90) days from date of hire.
  • A Standard licensure must be obtained prior to the expiration of the provisional and within one year of employment based on State of Florida provisional licensure guidelines.
When assigned to Building Inspector II
  • Must possess at least one standard license issued by the State of Florida for structural, roofing, mechanical, electrical or plumbing inspector or plans examiner at time of hire.
When assigned to Building Inspector III
