ResponsibilitiesThis is a professional position conducting confidential investigations of alleged abuse, neglect, self-neglect and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults. The duties of the person in this position include:
- Conducts investigations regarding allegations of abuse, neglect, self-neglect and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults.
- Serves as a mentor to unit adult protective investigators. Responsible for mentoring new adult protective investigators by taking them out to shadow prior to preservice training, orientation to community and state agency partners, and serving as the new API’s mentor and contact during the probationary period. Keeps the API supervisor, Operations Program Administrator, and APS region program office informed of potential issues including staffing, need for additional training, and higher level coaching of unit staff.
- Refer vulnerale adult(s) to appropriate services providers as determined by the investigation which may be initiated at any point during the investigation.
- Attend scheduled in-service and/or pre-service training as required. Participate in conferences, staffings and meetings as required.
- Serve as Acting Supervisor when the supervisor is unavailable by reviewing new intakes from the Florida Abuse Hotline for appropriateness; assign investigations as appropriate; complete critical and thorough review of submitted safety assessments, 30-day reviews and closures timely. Keep APS region program office informed of potential issues including staffing, and need for additional trainings.
Experience and skills expected include emergency, tactical or customer/public complaint interactions, interviewing and observation techniques, knowledge of family dynamics, research using internet sources, ability to assess service needs and facilitate service delivery, and ability to write professional investigative reports. Other abilities include conducting fact-finding interviews, understanding and applying laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; collecting and synthesizing evidentiary materials; planning, organizing and coordinating work;
active listening and effective communication; maintaining professional relationships; and using computer systems in a paperless environment. The work requires tact, patience, and courtesy when dealing with vulnerable adults and may involve handling emergency and non-emergency calls. Independent judgment and initiative are required to complete field assignments. Typing and good time management skills are necessary.
