Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education
  • Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant
  • Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission
  • Exceptions include:
    Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure
  • VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) and related authorities
  • The waiver will not apply to certain conversions
  • Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school
  • May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees)
  • Grade Determinations:
    In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met for each grade
  • The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade
  • GS-3:
    None beyond the basic requirements
  • GS-4:
    Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, or graduation from an approved school and one year of nursing care experience, or graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months, LPNs at GS-4 perform all duties at GS-3 with increased judgment and less supervision
  • GS-5:
    Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent; demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care; etc. (additional qualification statements maintained without alteration)
  • GS-6:
    At least one year of qualifying experience at GS-5 level; proficient in providing care to varied patients; ability to supervise and train others; recognize urgent patient care situations; preceptor duties; ongoing education
  • Other:
    Reference to VA Qualification Standards and full performance level information

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. Potentially long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs. Exposure to infected patients or contaminated materials; may require protective clothing. Ability to work in stressful situations and complete annual health requirements as per VA policy.

Duties
  • The Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) LPN is an essential member of the PACT Team
  • Responsibilities include daily and 2-week scrubbing, patient check-in, completing clinical reminders, and 2-day post-ED follow-up calls
  • Provide coverage in the Lab and specialty clinics during absences
  • Administer vaccinations, perform point-of-care testing, obtain vital signs and EKGs, and reinforce teaching
  • Serve as a warm hand-off to the provider after check-in
  • Role on the PACT team supports the health and well-being of Veterans
  • Preferred Experience:

    2 years in Ambulatory Care/Primary Care and/or Medical-Surgical settings; strong communication and customer service skills
