Thompson Construction Group has current openings for Hydraulic Shovel Operators supporting operations in the Fort McMurray area. This role involves operating large hydraulic shovels in active construction and mining environments, primarily focused on safely and efficiently loading haul trucks while maintaining high standards of safety, communication, and equipment care.

Responsibilities
  • Operate hydraulic shovels (equivalent in size to 5500-class)
  • Perform pre-operational and routine equipment inspections prior to use
  • Operate equipment in a smooth, controlled, and efficient manner
  • Follow direction from supervisors regarding work areas and daily tasks
  • Maintain awareness of ground disturbance requirements and underground utilities
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safe work practices
  • Participate in site safety meetings and safety programs
  • Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, and equipment concerns
  • Report incidents, near misses, and equipment damage to site supervision
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, spotters, dispatch, and other operators
  • Assist with general site duties as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating large hydraulic shovels in heavy civil construction, mining, or oil & gas environments
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work in the Fort McMurray area and reside in remote camps on a rotational schedule
  • CSO certification required
  • Ground Disturbance, H2S Alive, and First Aid considered assets
  • Physically capable of performing assigned duties
  • Dependable and reliable attendance
  • Ability to pass a pre-access drug and alcohol test
