Job Description

The Municipal Engineer plays a key role in shaping resilient, sustainable communities by contributing to the planning, design, and delivery of essential municipal infrastructure. This position focuses on underground utilities, including water distribution, sanitary sewer, stormwater management, and drainage improvements, and offers the opportunity to work on impactful projects from concept through construction.

In this role, you’ll combine hands-on technical design with collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, while gaining valuable exposure to construction-phase services. You’ll work with a degree of autonomy, supported by experienced senior engineers and project managers who are committed to your growth and professional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed designs and calculations for water, sanitary, storm, and drainage infrastructure in accordance with municipal and provincial standards.

  • Prepare engineering drawings, design reports, technical memos, and cost estimates.

  • Support preparation of tender documents, including specifications and quantities.

  • Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and provide construction support during project execution.

  • Coordinate with internal disciplines (survey, geotechnical, environmental) and external stakeholders (municipal staff, utility companies, contractors).

  • Contribute to quality assurance/quality control processes.

  • Assist project managers with scheduling, budgeting, and client communication as required.

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and registration as P.Eng. with a recognized Provincial engineering association

  • 4+ years of experience in municipal engineering, preferably in a consulting environment.

  • Experience with underground infrastructure design (water, sanitary, storm, drainage).

  • Strong understanding of municipal standards, design guidelines, and permitting processes.

  • Ability to interpret survey data, geotechnical reports, and utility information.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preparing tender packages and contract documents

  • Strong knowledge of construction practices and municipal inspection procedures

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and other civil design platforms

  • Familiarity with hydraulic modeling tools such as Water

    CAD and SWMM

  • Experience working with northern, rural, or remote communities is an asset

  • Ability to manage small tasks or sub-projects with minimal supervision

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time-management skills

  • Collaborative team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • High attention to detail and commitment to delivering quality work

  • Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $82000 to $125000.
