Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is looking for a full-time Educational Assistant in Elementary grades 1-6.

• Educational Assistant Certificate AND/OR Bachelors Degree in Education, English, Linguistics or similar is required
• Division Literacy Certification and the 2023/2024 refresher training preferred; if no applicants with both, then candidates with the 2023/2024 refresher training will be considered; if no applicants with the refresher training, then candidates with working experience in a Literacy position from 2024/2025 will be considered; if no candidates identified then must possess the required educational background for the 2025/2026 school year
• Successful candidate will be required to participate in ongoing literacy and numeracy training

• Work on literacy, numeracy, and/or ELL approaches with individual students or small groups
• Work collaboratively under guidance from the CST, the teacher(s) and any other member of the multidisciplinary team to support children with literacy and numeracy needs
• Plan daily reading, writing or numeracy activities under the direction of teacher or CST
• Adhere to the guidelines set out within reading programs (Fountas and Pinnell, Jolly Phonics, etc) and evaluate effectiveness of strategies being used
• Follow any IPP/ISP strategies as directed by the teacher and CST
• Able to communicate the reading level of students and give strategies for reading, writing, and word decoding to students and parents
• Able to work with technology and implement iPads, Chromebooks, and Smart Boards, etc into daily intervention
• Understanding of vocabulary topics within a unit to assist with pre-teaching concepts from the curriculum
• Implement ELL approaches that may include vocabulary development, speaking english, reading and writing development
• Implement daily record keeping for student literacy, numeracy, or ELL portfolio
• Complete term progress checklists with teacher
• Provides support to the general operation of the school
• Communicate effectively with students using age appropriate positive reinforcements and/or school specific behaviour strategies

Employee is expected to work with behaviours related/associated with conduct, obsessive/compulsive, trauma and stress related, severe chronic depressive, feeding and/or eating disorders etc. Other behaviours related to ADHD, emotional/behavioural, learning and speech & language-related disabilities, etc may be encountered.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Reference Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check. FMCSD will contact past and present employers for references. All FMCSD employees are expected to be computer literate; this includes fluency with e-mail, Internet and MS Office.
