Operations Manager, Program / Project Manager
Thompson Construction Group has current openings for a Senior Project Manager working in the Fort McMurray area. This role requires a strong onsite presence to support active operations. Local candidates with knowledge of the Fort McMurray region are strongly preferred; however, Fly-In/Fly-Out (FIFO) arrangements are available for qualified candidates.
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for overseeing large-scale civil construction and earthworks projects, providing leadership to project teams, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Responsibilities- Lead and manage large-scale construction projects from pre-construction through completion
- Oversee project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables
- Provide direction and support to project managers, engineers, foremen, and site supervision
- Coordinate daily project operations and workforce planning
- Manage project budgets, forecasts, cost tracking, and month-end accruals
- Review and approve change orders, cost estimates, and project reporting
- Oversee invoicing, billing, and financial controls
- Develop and maintain project schedules using Primavera or similar software
- Prepare and review project reporting including cost summaries, load counts, daily LEMs, volume tracking, and invoicing
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients and key stakeholders
- Attend and lead pre-tender, post-tender, and project start-up meetings
- Conduct regular job site visits to monitor progress, quality, and safety
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
- Assist with proposals, estimates, and business development activities as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in heavy civil construction, earthworks, or oil & gas projects
- Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (P.Eng. considered an asset)
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, project controls, and scheduling
- Proven ability to lead project teams on complex projects
- Proficient with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and scheduling software such as Primavera
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Willingness to work in the Fort McMurray area as a local employee or on a FIFO rotational schedule
- CSTS/OSSA or CSO certification
- Ability to pass a pre-access drug and alcohol test
