Position Summary:
The Substitute Health Assistant provides temporary support in addressing the health needs of students and provides appropriate care for ill and/or injured students under the supervision of the school nurse.
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
- Successfully passed one of the following programs:
- Current Iowa RN, LPN, MA (Medical Assistant) or CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant)
- Current/Up to Date CPR/BLS certification and Mandatory Reporter Training
- Experience working in a school setting, pediatrics or public health preferred
- Upholds school district health policies related to student health, safety, and confidentiality
- Provides basic first aid and emergency care to ill and injured students as directed by the school nurse
- Performs and documents accurate vital signs
- Initiates, maintains, and updates student medical and health records and databases on an ongoing basis as directed by the school nurse
- Maintains accurate health logs for all student visits to the nurse's office
- Aids in updating and maintaining student immunization records
- Communicates with students, school nurse, staff, and parent/guardian as directed by the school nurse
- Administers medications to students in compliance with district policy and physician's orders as directed by the school nurse
- Maintains nurse office and supplies
- Supports students' physical and emotional well-being during the school day
- Acts as an emergency responder in the building
- Willingness to learn special procedures (e.g., gastric-tube management, inhalation therapy, emergency protocols, etc.)
- Participates in specialized training for individual student health care needs (e.g., catheterization, insulin injections, feeding tube care, etc.)
- Performs other tasks that may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the supervisor; the health assistant shall work under the general direction of the building administration and nurse
- Completes required district training
- Reports to school nurse and building administration
- Other duties as assigned
Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking. Travel between school buildings may be required. Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Pay$15.00 per hour as a sub health assistant
