The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. This is a full-time position based in the Chicago Division, preferably St. Louis, MO;
West Quincy, MO;
Ft. Madison, IA;
Marceline, MO, and is subject to on-call responsibilities for emergency situations, as well as rotating shifts that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Travel is required approximately 75%.
Key Responsibilities- This position reports to the Manager of Structures.
- Budgeting, discipline safety programs, and auditing.
- Coordination with other departments to ensure a safe and efficient maintenance operation.
- Address technical training, safety training, follow up on safety issues, maintain contact with field personnel, and help enhance overall quality and safety guidelines.
- Ensure compliance and application of company policies, ie, BNSF's Equal Employment Policy, applicable safety rules, scheduled agreements, FRA standards and government regulations.
- Able to provide technical, leadership, and managerial coaching to supervisors in the division, and may require more extensive travel off their own assigned territory.
- Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
- Current BNSF employee with FLS Certification.
- Must have at least 3 years’ experience in the Engineering department, preferably in Structures group (Bridge Inspector/Foreperson) or Engineering Services.
- Knowledge in the construction, inspection and maintenance of bridges and their component parts.
- Knowledge of structures construction standards and Maintenance of Way Standards, Maintenance of Way and Bridge Worker Safety Rules and the General Code of Operating Rules.
- Must be Tier III certified and familiar with FRA and OSHA standards, and possess ability to be FRA Bridge Supervisor.
- Possess a working knowledge of union agreements and hours of service laws.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of safe railroad operations and practices.
- Must be safety conscious and able to support and contribute to a strong safety process.
- Proven ability to teach and coach others, including peers, associated with technical & leadership items.
- Must be self-directed, motivated and have good interpersonal, leadership, communication and writing skills.
- Must be able to communicate well, one on one and in-groups with superior mentoring capability.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or other Engineering-related field.
