Overview
This twelve-month position will teach adult education and literacy, including high school equivalency diploma preparation, to male offenders in a medium security prison. The instructor will provide group instruction and work one-on–one with students, focusing on students’ successful completion of instruction and testing necessary to earn a high school equivalency diploma and/or improving students’ skills to function in society.
This position will report to the Corrections Education Coordinator and is a full-time position (261-day contract) with an annual starting salary of $50,000.00. Benefits include medical, dental & vision insurance, $50,000 life insurance, long-term disability, paid sick leave, paid discretionary time, paid spring and holiday breaks, 15 days’ vacation and participation in IPERS or TIAA retirement plan.
Terms of employment are per the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the SCC Board of Trustees, MPCF and DOC. Employment contingent upon the continuation of DOC funding.
Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities- Commitment to the comprehensive community college philosophy.
- Follow SCC, DOC, and MPCF policies and procedures.
- Report directly to Corrections Education Coordinator-Liaison on matters related to teaching assignment.
- Work with colleagues to identify offenders who can participate in program.
- Work with other instructors in developing lesson plans, utilizing teaching aids/equipment, and identifying additional instructional aides.
- Update curriculum as needed and prepare lesson plans that provide all students an opportunity to learn.
- Monitor student’s progress toward earning a high school equivalency diploma and/or improving the academic, life and work skills necessary for successful reentry. Update appropriate program staff, applicable prison staff and supervisor about student progress.
- Immediately notify Coordinator-Liaison and prison staff of any problems with students.
- Accurately complete all paperwork necessary to document program services.
- Contribute input in development and modification of program operational procedures.
- Actively participate in regular and special team meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree with teaching certification required.
- Current Iowa Department of Education standard teaching license required.
- Experience in:
- Teaching Adult Education and Literacy, including High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) preparation, preferred.
- Working in a correctional setting preferred.
- Knowledge of computer software applications specifically Microsoft Office programs; ability to learn and develop competency in Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) offender information system (ICON).
- Demonstrated understanding, ability, and appreciation for working with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong human relations and interpersonal oral and written communication skills to interact positively with diverse personalities and populations.
- Ability to:
- Pass the background/security clearance check(s) necessary for employment at SCC and the DOC.
- Handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
- Understand and comply with reporting relationships at SCC and DOC.
- Organize and implement learning activities.
- Learn and maintain working knowledge required to complete student assessments (CASAS) and develop appropriate instruction based on assessment data.
- Comprehend and abide by federal and state laws, policies, guidelines, and procedures with regard to program implementation.
- Must have aptitude to be flexible and adjust to changes.
- Must meet DOC/MPCF security requirements. Participation in a 3 ½-week security training at the DOC Training Academy @IMCC in Coralville, Iowa is required. Attendance at a new employee orientation with SCC and MPCF/DOC is required.
