This is security and customer service work of routine difficulty in patrolling and safeguarding the Arts and Science Parking Garage and providing customer service and information to the public.
An employee in this class is responsible for patrolling buildings and grounds to guard and prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Possible work shifts:
- 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM (First Shift)
- 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM (Second Shift)
- 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM (Third Shift)
All work shifts are subject to change based on any changing needs for this position.
Essential Functions- Patrols an assigned area in and around City garages; secures doors and windows; reports fire hazards and other security issues
- Performs surveillance of City property by observing television monitors and responding to incidents observed
- Reports disturbances or suspicious circumstances which require police presence
- Operates communication systems, such as assigned radios and other security related equipment
- Writes incident reports as necessary on unusual security issues
- Provides customer service and information to the public
- Removes debris/cleans up any trash or materials which may create a safety hazard
- Performs related work as required
- Patrols and prevents admittance of unauthorized vehicles to City property and maintains records of authorized vehicles for assigned areas
- Issues parking tickets to violators at meters, employee only parking areas, and short-term parking areas
- Coordinates reserved parking requests for special events
- May work nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed, to fulfill the 24/7 operation
- Performs related work as required
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Must have at least one year of related experience including some security and customer service work
- Must be able to work at least 40 hours per week during the available shift
- Required to work assigned weekends and holidays

- Prior security guard and/or customer service experience, preferably for a public parking facility
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook
- The ability to communicate in various languages is a plus
Employees will walk or stand for extended periods of time. The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift, carry, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, grasp, stand and access heights or areas where limited space is available.
As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.
Applicants who qualify will be subject to an extensive selection process and screening program, which may include, but not be limited to evaluation of training and experience; written test; interview; employment record, background check; medical examination; and drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process varies by position.
