Art Therapist – Broward Health (Full Time, Days)

Plans, organizes, implements, and administers an art therapy program to support the social, emotional, intellectual, and developmental needs of hospitalized children and their families. Designs the program to reduce stress, pain, and anxiety of inpatient and outpatient hospitalization for pediatric patients and their families. Develops, provides, and documents clinical and evidence‑based art interventions to accomplish individualized goals in the hospital setting.

Collaborates as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide family‑centered therapy services and to develop and administer an individualized plan of care, adhering to the professional standards of practice of the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).

• Conduct medical art therapy sessions to provide clinical interventions addressing the mental health and psychosocial needs of patients and families throughout the hospital (inpatient and outpatient as needed) through creative expression and verbal processing.
• Ensure that interventions are developmentally appropriate with careful consideration given to safety and trauma‑informed practice for all age groups.
• Develop therapeutic rapport and alliance with patients and families, identify, assess, and respond to individualized needs, and provide timely interventions for families in crisis situations with complex psychosocial needs.
• Provide timely assessment, treatment planning, and clinical documentation toward a patient’s psychological, emotional, communication/cognition, behavioral, physical, and quality‑of‑life goals.
• Observe and document patient reactions, progress, or other outcomes related to art therapy in Cerner Power Chart.
• Collaborate and communicate via formal and informal means to coordinate service delivery with patients and families and among the psychosocial team, medical teams, and others to prioritize caseloads and maintain a holistic perspective of each family’s care. Make necessary referrals to other team members and/or community resources.
• Effectively engage patients and families in individual one‑to‑one bedside sessions and group art therapy sessions to build rapport and acknowledge progress.
• Integrate behavioral, developmental, improvisational, medical, or neurological approaches into art therapy treatments.
• In collaboration with palliative care, provide support and legacy building to families of critically and/or terminally ill patients through art making and verbal processing of medical art therapy.
• Collaborate with the expressive arts therapy team to educate staff and families throughout the hospital and affiliated communities on the role and benefits of medical art therapy.
• Perform job functions adhering to NCHS’ service principles.
• Maintain and ensure cleanliness and organization of work area, art supplies, and other equipment.

• Master’s Degree in Art Therapy
• American Heart Association (AHA) BLS – must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• Registered Art Therapist from the Art Therapy Credentials Board
• 4 years related experience utilizing various art techniques
• Experience in a hospital setting

• Board Certified preferred
• Membership and active participation with the AATA recommended
• Pediatric experience preferred
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
• Experience in palliative care preferred
• Basic knowledge in physiology and childhood development
• Knowledge of procedures, illnesses, injuries, and other related events on an inpatient unit
• Knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate care to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit
• Effective interpersonal skills to negotiate for cooperation and encourage collaboration with superiors, peers, physicians, and staff
• Flexibility to respond to departments’ needs and varying schedules
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
• Displays a professional image and models service excellence
• Experience dealing effectively with people in stressful situations
• Proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other mixed media
