Duties and Responsibilities
This independent professional position involves conducting regulatory field inspections to assure compliance with state and local laws and rules. Other duties include data entry, report writing, record keeping, providing education, and preparing legal notices. Inspects public swimming pools, water treatment components, complaint investigations, and enforcement. Inspects group care facilities, mobile home parks, and recreational vehicle parks. Investigates environmental nuisance complaints related to solid waste, disease vectors, and other public health threats.
May work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours in emergencies.
- Knowledge of Florida Administrative Codes, Florida Building Code, and Florida Statutes related to the duties.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Physical ability to move freely around inspection sites, including bending, squatting, light lifting, and climbing stairs and ladders.
- Ability to work outside in high heat and humid weather conditions.
- Ability to perform field inspections, document findings, write reports, and prepare legal notices.
- Ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to communicate inspection/investigation findings to customers, the general public, and community partners.
- Ability to utilize problem‑solving techniques to complete assignments.
- Current employee of Florida Department of Health (includes OPS, Career Service, SES or SMS employees).
- Valid driver’s license, free of major infractions and access to an automobile for work purposes.
- Willing to work outside in extreme Florida weather (heat and rain).
- Willing to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in an emergency.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public health, environmental health, environmental sciences, or a physical or biological science.
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public health, environmental health, environmental sciences, or a physical or biological science.
- Six (6) months of experience in a regulatory field in public health or environmental protection or 30 credit hours in a physical or biological science.
