Job Summary

This position will develop and prepare contract plans and specifications and perform complex engineering/geometric calculations in the development of project design.

Key Responsibilities

Develops and prepares contract plans and specifications. Utilizes CADD software in plans preparation and development. Ensures plans and specifications comply with design criteria, policies and procedures. Assembles roadway design plans, signing and pavement marking plans, signalization plans, lighting plans, No Passing Zone Studies (NPZ), Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), typical section packages, scopes of work, design exceptions and variations, and utility conflict reports for phase reviews and submittals.

Performs complex engineering/geometric calculations, develops alignment and grade, horizontal and vertical curves, bid items, quantities and summarizes quantities. Develops special designs for intersections, maintenance of traffic, profile grades and other road components with minimal supervision.

Follows project schedules and coordinates engineering functions with department support offices. Provides independent technical support and design services for projects under construction. Performs QA/QC reviews, permits reviews and LAP reviews to ensure compliance with Federal and Department design criteria.

Assists in preparing and presenting design details at public meetings, local agency workshops and internal staff meetings. Responds to log letters and public records requests and communicates with public and agency officials. Assists in field reviews, data collection and customer service documentation.

Provides technical guidance, knowledge of design processes, criteria evaluation, scope development and accurate estimate creation. Serves on Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for consultant design bid‑build, design/build projects and alternative contracting.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of
  • Highway design concepts, terminologies, principles and analytical techniques
  • Computer aided drafting and design (CADD) tools and office automation software
  • Project engineering and scheduling
  • Interpretation of roadway design standards, specifications and criteria adopted by FDOT
Skilled in
  • Engineering process for producing highway construction plans
  • Communicating technical information verbally and in writing
  • Planning, organizing and managing multiple work assignments
Ability to
  • Establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships
  • Apply engineering quantitative techniques in highway design
  • Solve engineering related problems
  • Use a personal computer (PC)
Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or its equivalent and one year of continuous employment experience. Post‑secondary education can substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
