PURPOSE

This Planning Assistant is an Ameri Corps position hosted by the National Park Service Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS). The NRSS advances park efforts in service wide resource management goals. The SIP participant will serve on projects to enhance environmental change response efforts, gain developmental opportunities, and potentially pursue future employment within the NPS system. The NRSS Environment Science & Adaptation Coordinator will mentor the participant, who will work alongside CCRP subject matter experts, communication specialists, and park leads on key projects.

DESCRIPTION

OF DUTIES
  • 1) Natural Disaster Planning and Recovery Project
    • Develop technical tools for usable and relevant data (environmental/hydrologic projections) for parks facing and recovering from extreme events.
    • Develop case studies of disaster planning and/or recovery projects that incorporate environmental change adaptation.
    • Serve directly with park(s) on adapted disaster preparation or recovery plans.
    • Develop a guide to help parks incorporate considerations for a changing environment into disaster planning and recovery.
  • 2) Adaptation Case Studies
    • Identify and document adaptation implementation projects in parks (natural, cultural, facility, fire, or visitor management and safety).
    • Interpret environmental change impacts and intended or actual outcomes of adaptation activities into original content.
  • 3) Journal Publication – collaborate with mentors to write an article for the journal Park Science, incorporating content from at least one of the above projects.
  • 4) NPS Data Store – work with CCRP staff to make existing and forthcoming products usable through the NPS Data Store application; create new records, set permissions, metadata, and upload products.
  • 5) Professional Growth and Development – identify and participate in learning opportunities reserved with service time.
  • 6) CCRP Support – assist on miscellaneous CCRP projects as needed, based on education, skills, and experience.
DELIVERABLES
  • One or more NPS‑focused products on adapted disaster planning and recovery.
  • At least ten new park environmental change adaptation case studies.
  • A journal article submitted to Park Science.
  • At least ten new Data Store collections of park‑specific environmental science.
  • Well‑organized files documenting the development of all deliverables.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate; or commitment to obtain one before receiving the education award.
  • Provide information to establish eligibility and complete required criminal history and background checks.
  • Availability to participate for the entire 52 weeks.
