The Position

This entry level skilled craft position involves operating non-commercial passenger vehicles and ancillary equipment (wheelchair lift, two-way radio) to transport customers with special needs, such as senior citizens and persons with disabilities, to assigned destinations. Para‑transit routes are primarily followed, though fixed routes may be assigned if necessary. The incumbent is evaluated based on safe and efficient vehicle operation and quality of services provided to customers.

Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, requiring the incumbent to be physically able to repeatedly lift and carry at least 50 lbs and wear and maintain a uniform and safety equipment. The role is supervised by a Transit Service Coordinator (TSC) and may include weekend routes.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) maintains nearly 2,000 miles of County‑maintained roadways, 900 bridges, and supporting infrastructure. Responsibilities include snow and ice removal, traffic signal upgrade, streetlight installation, tree removal, drainage maintenance, and roadway repairs.

Examples of Work
  • Safely operate non-CDL vehicles in passenger service for Call‑a‑Bus and/or PGC Link while adhering to department policies and federal, local, and state laws.
  • Utilize mobile transit technology to follow schedule and notify passengers of trip progression.
  • Maintain communication by radio with Dispatch and Transit Service Coordinators to report service interruptions.
  • Greet passengers and provide general customer service by responding to inquiries and providing general transit information.
  • Assist passengers boarding/disembarking with wheelchairs or other mobility aids to include their proper securement.
  • Ensure cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior and fuel vehicle after each shift.
  • Conduct routine inspections of assigned vehicle before/after use according to safety and operating procedures and report any defects accordingly.
  • Participate as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities.
  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned that are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Qualifications
  • High school graduation or GED equivalency.
  • One (1) year of transit operation experience with direct customer service experience.
  • Class "C" driver's license.

Applicant experience and training may equivalently provide required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Candidates must clearly demonstrate these qualifications.

Conditions of Employment
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in performance of duties, if applicable.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks, including reference checks, background investigation, and drug screening, where applicable.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee during standard, non-standard hours or emergencies; report or remain at work when other County employees are on administrative leave.
  • Maintain a current Class "C" driver's license and submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record.
  • Be willing to work weekend routes if assigned.
  • Participate as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.
