STATE PROFILE SUMMARY
Under broad supervision, performs engineering assignments in specialized areas.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES- Under limited supervision
, serve as an engineer in the Geotechnical Branch performing engineering analyses and preparing geotechnical reports and recommendations for foundations, earthwork, slopes, and retaining structures. - Review geotechnical reports, designs, and submittals prepared by others to ensure technical adequacy, constructability, and compliance with GDOT and AASHTO requirements.
- Analyze subsurface investigation data and resolve geotechnical design issues related to soil and rock conditions encountered on transportation projects.
- Provide geotechnical engineering support, including evaluation of field conditions, responses to request for information, and assessing and providing solutions to differing site conditions.
- Perform research/evaluation of new technologies/methods/material specification changes and prepare research reports with findings.
- Recommend updates or changes to geotechnical policies, procedures, and design guidance based on research findings, field performance, or evolving industry standards.
- Coordinate geotechnical activities with other GDOT offices and external contractors to support project delivery.
- Participate in site visits in support of geotechnical fieldwork investigations and operations.
- Ensures quality control standards are met and applies engineering judgment while working under the direction of Geotechnical Branch management.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an A.B.E.T.
-accredited program or equivalent degree in a related field OR Valid State of Georgia Engineer in training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the State of Georgia and one (1) year of job‑related experience.
- Applicants with a bachelor's degree from an international institution must submit a course‑by‑course evaluation from a GDOT‑approved credentialing provider.
- Experience performing geotechnical analyses and evaluating subsurface investigation and laboratory testing data.
- Knowledge of engineering principles, practices and techniques, testing data analysis, design specifications, thorough understanding of roadway plans.
- Experience preparing and reviewing engineering reports; directing the production field work; meeting schedule deadlines.
- Experience solving practical engineer problems.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new software.
- Ability to work and communicate with supervisors, consultants, other DOT Offices, and other customers.
- Ability to act as a lead worker directing, training, and assisting in evaluation of less experienced engineers.
- Ability to read and comprehend information such as specifications, construction plans, maintenance plans, and plans from other offices.
- Committed to providing quality customer service.
- Possesses certification as an Engineer‑in‑Training.
- Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, practices, and techniques, including foundation design, slope stability, and retaining structures.
- Experience using geotechnical engineering software applications such as APILE, GRLWEAP, SLIDE, SHAFT, gINT, and other programs to support foundation, pile, and slope stability analyses.
