The City of Forest Lake is committed to the well citizens. We currently are hiring sworn, full-time Police Officers to carry out the lawful functions of the Police Department including the suppression of crime, the protection of life and property, the apprehension and arrest of violators of criminal and traffic laws, the recovery of stolen and/or lost property, and the regulation of non-criminal conduct.

Duties

of the Position

The primary duties of the Police Officer are defined, but not limited to the following:

  • General police work; protection of life and property, maintenance of order, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and enforcement of laws and ordinances.
  • Working in accordance with departmental orders, directives, and memos to provide general good order and peacefulness in the City of Forest Lake.
  • To provide timely response and varied services while performing the daily routines of patrolling, investigations, and traffic regulation in the City of Forest Lake.
  • At the discretion of the Chief of Police, to accept and complete any short or long term assignments deemed necessary to accomplish the police mission.
Examples of Work Performed

The Police Officer shall be required to have the following skills and perform the following duties:

  • Patrol a designated area in a squad car, or by other means as assigned, to preserve law and order, prevent and discover the commission of crimes, supervise traffic flow, enforce laws, ordinances, and vehicle regulations.
  • Make contacts with the public and business people of Forest Lake. Offer directions, suggestions on crime prevention, information about the City and the Police Department, and other information that promotes the public image of the City and its Police Department.
  • Will assist other police agencies if requested or a need is determined to exist.
  • Will work to insure the safety and protection of life and property
    • Will enforce the law.
    • Will render first aid.
    • Will report any circumstances that may endanger life or property and take appropriate action to remedy the situation.
    • Will report crime hazards and inform citizens of steps to take to better protect their persons and property.
    • Will assist any person whose safety or property is threatened.
  • Will work to maintain peace and order in the community.
    • Will attempt to resolve disputes and prevent violence in domestic quarrels, civil disputes and neighborhood feuds.
  • Will make a concerted effort to be of public service where able, and/or make referrals to appropriate agencies.
    • Will assist motorists in distress.
    • Will give directions and information to those in need.
    • Will make a concerted effort to assist any citizen when requested.
    Will perform other miscellaneous duties as required.
    • Will be responsible for the care, cleanliness and maintenance of department equipment.
    • Will patrol various areas of the City, handling calls and being on constant watch for crimes, citizens in distress, fires, and any other problems or circumstances that affect the health, safety, and order of the community.
    • Will be responsible for keeping abreast of current laws, events, and changes in the field of law enforcement.
  • Shall display a courteous and professional attitude and appearance at all times, even under stress.
  • Shall be able to receive and carry out orders, either oral or written.
  • Shall be able to communicate effectively in making oral and written reports.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police, Captain, or Sergeant.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed under MN P.O.S.T. Board standards.
  • Must possess a Minnesota driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass a competitive testing procedure.
  • Must successfully pass a psychological examination and a background investigation.
  • Outdoor & Field Environments
    • City streets, neighborhoods, highways, accident sites, rural areas, forests, or farmland.
    • Parks, public events, and large gatherings.
