To perform professional library functions within the youth services program of the Library; to develop the youth services collection; to provide assistance, education and information to patrons on Library use and services; and to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

This position is represented by AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees).

Youth Services Librarian for ages 0-12
  • Perform professional library functions within the youth services program of the Library; provide assistance to library patrons in locating various materials; explains use of automated catalog systems, indexes and databases; recommend materials to patrons using standard bibliographic sources; locate materials on the shelf.
  • Identify appropriate sources for obtaining books and other materials that the Library does not own; suggest resources from within the library's collection or from other libraries.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend the purchase of books and periodicals for the children’s services collection; maintain awareness of trends in book publishing through reading appropriate library and related journals.
  • Evaluate and recommend items for withdrawal from the children’s services collection; analyze subject areas on a regular basis to ensure adequacy and currency of materials.
  • Initiate and oversee plans and preparations for seasonal and on‑going programs and activities including story times, summer reading and related youth services programs; coordinate as appropriate with the Teen Services Librarian for programming; oversee and participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays.
  • Perform a variety of Outreach activities with schools and community organizations both inside and outside the library.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, telephone system, copy machine, facsimile machine and other related equipment.
  • May drive a motor vehicle to attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of library science and youth services.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Maintain regular, predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
  • Typical duties of this position include:

    • community outreach & engagement;
    • grant writing and management;
    • budget or project management;
    • collection development;
    • knowledge of library cataloging and classification theory;
    • providing ready reference and/or reader’s advisory;
    • small group instruction (15+ students);
    • public speaking (40+ people);
    • providing instruction and/or troubleshooting for patrons in relation to computer hardware, software, or portable devices (including Overdrive support);
    • social media content creation and /or some familiarity with graphic design principles
    Education

    Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university, or ability to obtain within six months of date of hire required.

    Experience

    Two years of experience working in a public library setting OR 2 years of paid experience working directly with children ages 0‑12 preferably in a government setting (parks department, school district, DHS, Head Start, etc).

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bilingual in English/Spanish Language strongly preferred.
    • Paid experience working with children ages 0‑12 and their families preferred.
    • Paid experience as a Librarian in a public library setting preferred.
