As a Field Service Technician‑Network you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and/or other business systems). This role involves splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities and equipment, including aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable.
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, candidates must reside within a 45‑minute driving distance from the Plymouth, WI warehouse (W4875 County Road U, Plymouth, WI 53073). The position can be hired at either Field Service Technician (requisition ‑28861) or Field Service Technician‑Network (requisition ‑28862) level, depending on the candidate’s skills and qualifications. Responsibilities- Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers.
- Configure, maintain, and repair Key Systems, PBX, Centralx Systems and other business systems such as fiber terminals, ISPs, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and/or DS3s.
- Identify location of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs.
- Perform pole climbing and operate construction equipment. Mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
- Keep an orderly log of all locate requests in the exchange area and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
- Provide troubleshooting support and respond to “trouble” dispatches.
- Support record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.) and perform project management of installation projects as requested by supervisor.
- Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- At least 6 months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, and repair or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to follow TDS attendance guidelines.
- Successful completion of customer‑specific background checks and safety course curriculum.
- Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities, occasional travel and willingness to work overtime.
- Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with combined GVRW >10,000 lbs and operate manual‑transmission vehicles.
- Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of telecommunication products and services (inside wiring, internet, bonding & grounding, data & computer transmission concepts, fiber optics, video/CATV, inventory systems, cable locating, battery maintenance, key systems, voice mail, specialty circuits, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN, etc.).
- Experience with computer applications including databases, dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Office, and CD‑ROMs.
- Ability to work independently, make decisions with little or no supervision, and provide excellent customer service and sales skills.
- Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
Responsibilities require sitting, standing, writing, operating a computer keyboard, standard office equipment, and telephone.
