This position is responsible to perform assembly operations in building one or more types of precision unit assemblies, standard unit assemblies, and machine erection/teardown support. Some assemblies may include development or prototype units.

This position will be on 2nd Shift after initial training.

Scope and Responsibilities
  • Proactively attain a clean, safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
  • Retrieve and study assembly instructions, detailed part prints, assembly layouts and parts lists.
  • Gather parts/units, tools and/or material from inventory using a supplied material list.
  • Prepare parts prior to assembly. This includes small sized unit assembly work.
  • Follow detailed work instructions on order or assembly operations.
  • Work with engineering/supervision to identify issues and formulate corrective actions to assure product quality.
  • Test precision units and validate quality specifications are achieved.
  • Assemble machines/units to current assembly procedures, layouts and parts lists.
  • Practice company standards for:

    • fitting procedures
    • pre-loading techniques
    • lubrication requirements
    • alignments
    • fastenings
    • bonding
    • pinning
    • drilling
    • tapping
    • reaming
    • torqueing
    • pitch movement
    • yaw movement
    • roll movement
    • horizontal and vertical straightness and flatness
    • squaring and parallelism
  • Practice proper measuring tool selection, usage, inspection and storage:
    • Including but not limited to feeler gauges, dial indicators, Vernier calipers, gage blocks, mechanical gages, autocollimator
  • Use small hand tools (taps, reamers, files, etc.) for assembly process.
  • Use power tools, both air and electrically powered for assembly process including drill press, sanders, and grinders.
  • Perform machine set-up/verification of customer's order specifications by inspection and/or measuring:
    • Perform dimensional geometric checkouts of larger units or sub-assemblies on granite
    • Perform proper machine foundation set-ups.
  • Perform various installation or assembly work such as:
    • One-piece bed assembly
    • Heavy sheet metal assembly tool changer or tool matrix assembly simple tubing assembly
    • Ball screw fit-up, alignment and checkout
    • Electronic linear scale fit-up, alignment and checkout
    • Linear guide fit-up and checkout
    • Intermediate sized units such as Gearbox, tables, spindles, etc.
  • Complete required machine and departmental paperwork for each unit/machine assembled.
  • Work alone or with a team on assembly assignments. Little supervision is required.
  • Disassemble, evaluate, test, adjust, troubleshoot and repair assemblies.
  • Assist and train less experienced personnel to further their skills.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of large parts or major machine components when necessary.
  • Perform dismantling of machines.
  • Follow safety standards in shop such as:
    • wearing safety glasses at all times
    • using other personal protective equipment when required
  • Safe operation of cranes and forklifts.
  • Participate upon request on any improvement teams.
  • Report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective material (using current nonconforming material procedure), and unusual conditions to supervision.
  • Understand cost impact for improper assembly technique and damage.
  • Communicate with customers and/or vendors on machine or component issues.
  • Demonstrate unit or machine performance to customers and/or vendors.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Willingness to work overtime and/or work on "off-shifts" as required by business needs.
  • ISO 9001 & 14001 awareness and compliance.
Education/Certification
  • One year certificate from college or technical school and/or three to eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
  • Three to eight years’ experience assembling technical heavy equipment.
