Overview

Under general supervision, inspects and rehabilitates environmental hazards in public and private premises by determining the presence of health hazards, nuisance violations, unsafe building conditions, zoning violations, and violations of any environmental health regulation, statute, and ordinance.

Responsibilities
  • Patrols the Town, investigates code and ordinance violations on residential and commercial properties, and takes appropriate enforcement actions.
  • Documents and maintains written records and photo documentation of all enforcement activities.
  • Performs various forms of research including but not limited to property histories, public records, plats, surveys, and maps etc.
  • Prepares notices of violation, citations, affidavits, work orders, and reports, etc.
  • Files court cases and testify in municipal court as required.
  • Responds, orally and in writing, to requests for code interpretation and application from the general public and other Town staff.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Participates in and/or coordinates related projects like neighborhood cleanups or outreach events with other Town departments, neighborhood groups, and outside agencies.
  • Continually learns and interprets Town and state codes, and enforcement best practices.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Informs supervisor of all work-related activities.
  • Assists other coworkers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Must have a valid state issued driver's License and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
  • Must obtain a Code Enforcement Officer certification within one (1) year of employment with the Town.

  • Must be able to see, talk, hear, write, type, walk, bend, stoop, reach, kneel, twist, and climb.
  • Must be able to push, pull, and lift up to 25 lbs. of signs, equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, in trenches, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable, and muddy terrain; work in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather, hazardous conditions including mechanical, electrical, fume odor, dust/mist, chemical, and toxic waste hazards and other solid waste substances, and exposure to insects, noxious plants, snakes, etc.

Desired Qualifications
  • One (1) or more years of experience in code enforcement, environmental health, customer service, or property management is preferred.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Must have excellent English communicative skills, both oral and written, to include spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
  • Bilingual communicative skills are preferred.
  • Must have basic skills in computer operations to include Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn various types of computer software.
  • Must be able to use reading comprehension and critical thinking skills to identify solutions to complex problems.
  • Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written directives, handle multiple tasks, and prioritize and organize work assignments.
  • Must be able to remain composed during stressful circumstances and demonstrate courtesy, understanding, and empathy.
  • Must be able to learn and interpret related ordinances, codes, and procedures for handling code and ordinance violations.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends.
