Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, provides reference and reader advisory services, plans, and presents programs for children, young adults, and families; and participates in the collection development process for children’s and young adult collections.
  • Demonstrates excellent internal and external customer service in all interactions with respect, responsiveness and professionalism.
  • Communicates effectively across work teams and with the public through active listening, writing and speaking.
  • Listens to understand, and respond with sensitivity and inclusivity of varying viewpoints; navigates critical conversations with respect and diplomacy
  • Provides respectful, efficient instruction and assistance to patrons in the use of facilities, equipment, services, technology, and other resources; aids in locating library resources and services; answers reference questions and offers reader advisory; instructs patrons using library programs and technologies
  • Supports a safe and welcoming environment for patrons and staff by addressing patron complaints and concerns; administers Flower Mound Public Library (FMPL) and Town of Flower Mound policies and procedures to maintain building safety for staff and patrons
  • Assumes leadership role in the absence of management
  • Actively participates in program content creation and delivery; applies expertise and knowledge of community needs; participates in community outreach events.
  • Aids in collection development of assigned area, maintenance, and management in partnership with Library Technical Services staff
  • Demonstrates professional leadership and project management skills by engaging in FMPL committees, initiatives and special projects
  • Exhibits a commitment to the foundations of librarianship by understanding and applying the precepts of intellectual freedom; articulates the value of library services to the community
  • Processes library materials, patron holds, library card applications and fee payments
  • Supports library building technology according to library and town standards
  • Adheres to the personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Assists other coworkers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Must have an American Library Association accredited Master of Library or Information Services Degree OR be enrolled in an American Library Association accredited Master of Library or Information Services degree program and be able to obtain degree within six (6) months of employment.
  • One (1) year of professional library experience is preferred.

  • Must be able to file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves; lift up to 25 lbs. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
  • Must have a working knowledge of children’s and young adult’s literature and the practices and principles of modern public library operations.
  • Must have creative and artistic skills and knowledge of child development.
  • Must have excellent English communicative skills, both oral and written, to include spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Must be able to work independently, prioritize duties and tasks, and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Must maintain good relations with the public and other staff and demonstrate tact and courtesy in all situations.
  • Must be skilled in personal computer operations to include MS Office, computerized databases, social media, and downloadable e-books and audio books.
  • Must have experience with library automation.
  • Must operate office equipment as needed.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects; prioritize and organize work assignments; and meet deadlines.
  • Must work well under pressure and stress.
  • Must maintain a professional, pleasant, and friendly demeanor at all times.
