Location: Micanopy

Overview

Seasonal recreational position responsible for providing swim lessons in a safe and positive environment, enforcing established rules and regulations, and rescuing those who are in distress. Exudes a positive customer service focus. Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with the County's core values. Reports to the Camp Manager.

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and a Level 2 criminal history background investigation prior to employment (including fingerprinting) and compliance with FBI CJIS requirements.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must be able to swim 100 yards continuously (4 pool lengths).
  • Must be able to swim 25 yards front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke, elementary backstroke, side stroke and 15 yards butterfly.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within 1 month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, AED certification within 1 month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct swim lessons and maintain class attendance reports and course records.
  • Provide a safe and positive environment for class participants; perform general housekeeping in the aquatic facility.
  • Communicate regularly with participants and patrons regarding student progress; prepare and deliver age-appropriate, skill-focused lessons based on participant abilities.
  • Complete incident/accident reports as necessary.
  • May be required to perform lifeguard duties when necessary, only if the swim instructor is also current in Red Cross lifeguard certification.
  • Work requires flexible hours (weekends, mornings, and evenings).
  • Perform duties with professionalism and a sense of urgency.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current swimming techniques, CPR, First Aid, and pool safety guidelines.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to develop and implement solutions.
  • Skill in swimming, water rescues, CPR, and first aid.
  • Skill in the use of pool equipment, chemicals and related tools.
  • Ability to interpret and implement Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons; determine appropriate skill level for participants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to understand and communicate with children.
  • Physical abilities: lift up to 50 lbs; ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel, and lift throughout the day; good vision and hearing; ability to work in hot, cold, humid, wet and loud environments.
  • Ability to be proactive in safety precautions, recognize emergencies, and take appropriate action; react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to handle distressed swimmers and patrons professionally; establish priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Ability to serve as a role model, demonstrate dependability, enthusiasm and creativity; follow simple oral and written instructions; think clearly in emergencies; establish and maintain effective working relationships with campers, parents, other employees and the public; recognize obvious safety hazards.

Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment includes exposure to outdoor weather conditions; noise level ranges from moderate to loud. This is a seasonal position with hours varying and including weekdays, weeknights, weekends, and/or holidays.
