Job Summary
Operations position responsible for assisting in overseeing the safe operation, daily monitoring, and maintenance of large‑scale industrial computer‑based ammonia systems and office HVAC systems. Provide assistance to Refrigeration Tech II & III and Facility Manager to ensure assets (Refrigeration/HVAC/Electrical systems) are managed in accordance with IIAR, ASHRAE, ASME, EPA, OSHA and applicable State and Local Codes. Ideal candidate will have HVAC/R schooling, RETA Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO) certification, universal EPA certification, and at least four years' experience with service/maintenance of HVAC/R.
Responsibilities- Perform required inspections and preventive maintenance of refrigeration storage equipment ranging from 50 HP to 3,000 HP.
- Use knowledge of screw and reciprocal compressors, electrical troubleshooting of ammonia central systems, and control/alarm systems to perform inspections and preventive maintenance.
- Familiarity with controls and electrical (high and low voltage), PC and PLC based master refrigeration control systems.
- Maintain freezer and cooler ammonia system through scheduled preventive maintenance activities including checking, draining, and filling oil levels; oil analysis; filter changes; belt adjustments or replacements; ammonia leak checks; compressor and condenser cycle checks; water treatment chemical levels.
- Log time and materials in CMMS daily in the form of work orders, PMs, etc.
- Oversee and manage refrigeration, electrical, and HVAC systems, including monitoring, trending, troubleshooting, repairs, leak detection, inspection reporting, glycol underfloor warming system knowledge, and energy‑management strategy implementation.
- Ensure product integrity through temperature monitoring & control; evaluate and report equipment condition.
- Perform small electrical repairs and welding projects as needed to reduce contract or purchase service needs.
- Communicate daily pertinent information regarding system operation and maintenance to departmental management and maintenance teams.
- Maintain housekeeping and cleanup of refrigeration machine rooms, maintenance areas, and project areas.
- Interpret and understand plans, specifications, schematics, operating manuals, and maintenance manuals for overseen systems.
- Conduct audits ensuring all required inspections and documentation are completed accurately (food safety documentation, ePSM, PSM, etc.).
- Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC equipment problems; repair or replace defective equipment, components, or wiring.
- Carry out preventive maintenance tasks and inspections on HVAC equipment; suggest efficiency ideas, cost reduction measures, and assist with implementation within the maintenance department.
- Work under extreme cold and heat, around ammonia, noise, dust, paint, grease, and high voltage wires.
- Perform all other duties as assigned, including non‑refrigeration tasks such as light carpentry, painting, plumbing, lighting, minor electrical device repair, fleet, MHE, and grounds maintenance.
- Demonstrate adherence to all work safety policies, procedures, and governing requirements.
- Participate in departmental on‑call program as designated.
- Utilize CMMS to order necessary parts and devices, maintaining inventory of related parts.
- Maintain all tools and equipment in clean, safe, working order.
- Maintain technical skills and required certifications.
- Adhere to safety requirements and wear proper PPE.
- Respond to emergency situations to ensure employee and facility safety.
- Champion overall department safety and comply with OSHA and other regulations.
- Collaborate with leadership to meet strategic goals of the organization’s system.
- Adhere to organization and facilities department policies on attire, grooming, and attendance.
- Serve on departmental and/or organizational committees or focus groups as requested.
- Interact effectively, build relationships, and demonstrate high cooperation.
- High School diploma or GED.
- HVAC/R tech school preferred.
- Four years of industrial HVAC/R experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Preferred experience with anhydrous ammonia (R717).
