About Our Job
To assist in the acceptance, preliminary sorting, segregation and packaging of hazardous waste and/or regulated waste that is received through County collection programs (on and off-site). Employee works primarily independently.
Job DescriptionAccepts, preliminary sorts, segregates and packages for disposal the waste that is received through County sponsored collection programs under the direction of a supervisor.
Greets customers, verified disposal receipts, directs customers at the Chemical Collection Centers.
Performs preliminary chemical analysis on unknown materials.
Lab Packs and consolidates hazardous materials and wastes into drums for transportation and disposal in accordance with regulatory requirements and established contractor guidelines.
Practices good housekeeping and assists in the maintenance and cleanliness of collection facilities.
Prepares container inventory sheets and tracks materials in spreadsheets.
Loads, delivers, and off-loads containers of waste at approved disposal facilities.
Performs scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance on all collection facilities and surrounding areas. This includes general maintenance activities, preventative maintenance of equipment, pressure washing exterior building/ structure/pavement surfaces, weed eating and minor repairs to structural components.
Uses, maintains and calibrates environmental monitoring instruments such as gas detectors and organic vapor analyzers.
Picks up and transports waste to the main collection facility for processing. Pickups up waste generated by disabled citizens, small quantities of abandoned waste and batteries from collection points.
Work Hours:
Monday – Saturday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or its equivalent. Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License. Must pass OSHA 40 Hour Hazwoper and DOT HM 181/126 certifications within six (6) months of employment (probationary period will not be completed until these exams are passed). CAA Refrigerant Removal/Universal certification may be required for certain positions. Must satisfactorily pass a medical evaluation demonstrating ability to use a respirator.
Must maintain certifications for continued eligibility in this job class.
Preferred Qualifications:
College Degree or Certificate with an emphasis in chemical, physical, biological, or environmental sciences preferred with a minimum of one-year of experience working with Hazardous Materials.
Job
Competencies:
Knowledge of Hazardous Materials, Computer, Drum Dolly, Pallet Jack, Vehicles requiring a CDL, Pneumatic Tools, Basic Maintenance Tools. Ability to pass a Hazmat Physical. Ability to wear personal protective equipment including an air purifying respirator.
Physical Demands:
Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening:
This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
