Position Overview and Responsibilities

This Environmental Consultant position is part of the Florida Geological Survey’s Geologic Sample Acquisition and Management (GSAM) section involved in the FGS’s Florida Geological Survey Mapping Initiative (FGSMI). You will supervise an Environmental Specialist III position within the GSAM section, including setting expectations and evaluating performance of duties. Fieldwork will be a major component of this position’s duties including conducting fieldwork, recording observations, sampling outcrops and exposures, geophysical data collection, and collecting core samples.

You will use the knowledge gained through fieldwork, examination of geologic samples, and geophysical data interpretation to complete new geologic maps. Most importantly, the work that this position will be involved with will help the FGS construct a better geologic understanding of the state of Florida as well as similar geologic environments in our natural world.

This is a managerial scientist position requiring professional experience in geology. Supervises a geologist involved in mapping and other geologic projects, including oncore drilling projects. Responsible for setting expectations, determining work plans and field schedules, and evaluating performance. Become familiar with geologic sample collection with core drilling and direct push equipment. Crosstrain on operation of the borehole and surface geophysical tools to collect data at project‑specified intervals;

learn to process and interpret geophysical logs. Perform detailed lithologic descriptions of geologic samples, especially those drilled by FGS for ongoing mapping efforts.

Serves as a District Geologist as assigned, including managing a lithologic description contract if applicable, and supervising part‑time OPS staff describer. Responsible for tracking budget and progress, providing updates as needed, and invoicing completed work.

Conducts statewide geological investigations. Collects geologic data to aid in the construction of geologic maps and geologic products that facilitate the completion of various projects. Conducts field investigations that may include core drilling, outcrop sampling, geophysical data collection and interpretation, and any other methods necessary to further the understanding of Florida’s geologic history. Will produce geologic maps, cross sections, and other geologic products as required.

Must be familiar with techniques for describing the lithology of Florida’s geologic formations and must be familiar with the lithostratigraphic units recognized in Florida. Must be willing and able to conduct geologic field work throughout the State of Florida and must be familiar with field sampling and field data collection techniques.

Responds to public inquiries and requests for geologic information about sinkholes or other aspects of Florida geology. May provide public lectures and presentations to customers about Florida geology.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the stratigraphy of Florida and how to identify geologic formations.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used for describing the lithology, paleontology, and mineralogy of rocks and sediment.
  • Knowledge and experience in geologic field mapping.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis of geologic materials.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of scientific geophysical/geological investigations and field sample and data collection.
  • Skilled in use of personal computers, scientific calculators, scientific reference sources and computer programs necessary to produce reports, geologic maps, cross‑sections and other graphical representations of geologic data.
  • Skilled in analyzing and solving geologic problems.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to work on drill rigs as needed for geologic data collection.
  • Ability to produce quality written reports and scientific publications as the result of conducting geologic research and mapping.
