Responsibilities

This highly responsible clinical nursing position provides primary care services, diagnostic evaluations, and physical examinations for adults and children in the rural, medically underserved counties of Bradford and Union. The nurse is based in Union County but may occasionally travel to Bradford County.

The role involves skilled performance of physical examinations and assessments with concurrent treatment of common and acute illnesses. The nurse reviews lab studies in accordance with established protocols under a physician’s supervision and works through conferences and consultations. The nurse assesses family planning patients’ total health needs through physical exams, medical history, observation, palpation, auscultation, percussion, and indicated lab procedures. The nurse treats patients according to written established protocols approved by the Health Department Physician and advises patients in the management of common acute and chronic problems.

The nurse consults with a physician regarding management of unusual illnesses not covered by protocol or for further assessment and evaluation. The nurse counsels patients regarding sexually transmitted diseases, prevention, and treatment according to protocol. The nurse directs staff and activities related to medical care of acute and chronic medical conditions and referrals. The nurse provides wound management and simple procedures established in protocols within scope of practice and training.

Referrals to specialists for illnesses as needed for treatment not within the scope of services provided by the Bradford County Health Department. The nurse participates in quality improvement and quality assurance activities of the program and makes recommendations for changes to enhance services. The nurse attends meetings, classes, conferences, and in‑service programs as requested or assigned to update knowledge and skills related to health department activities.

The nurse follows the DOH and local information security policies and other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations related to confidential information.
  • Skilled in completing documentation of work.
  • Ability to follow directions.
Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Licensure as an APRN in the State of Florida.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • CPR certification.
