OverviewWhat You’ll Do
The Director of Communications leads the development and execution of college-wide communication strategies that inform, engage, and connect the campus community. This position is responsible for advancing communications, media relations, and community relations, while collaborating with campus and external partners. The Director oversees social media, earned media, multimedia production, and media relations initiatives, ensuring all efforts align with the College’s strategic plan and departmental goals.
In addition to supervising staff, the Director shapes and evaluates communication objectives and strategic initiatives that strengthen the College’s reputation and visibility.
- Coordinate and assess student communications across the College by inventorying and mapping messages from various offices to ensure consistent tone, voice, timing, volume, and delivery. The goal is to improve the student experience through clear, consistent, and timely communication that supports enrollment and completion.
- Direct media relations, including responding to inquiries, cultivating relationships with journalists, and proactively positioning the College in local, state, and national media.
- Lead the development and implementation of College-wide communications strategies that support the institution’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities.
- Serve as a College brand champion, ensuring every communication reflects our mission, values, and brand voice. Serve as an advisor to College leadership on communications, media relations, and crisis communications strategies.
- Supervise and mentor the communications team, providing leadership, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
- Support the Vice President in crisis communications planning and response, serving as a key member of the crisis management team to help protect and strengthen the College’s reputation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or a related field of study
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in communications, including at least two (2) years in a management role
- A master’s degree in a related field is preferred and may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience
- Preferred qualifications include advising organizational leaders on communications strategies and direct experience in public information, media relations, public relations, and crisis communications. Higher education experience is a plus.
