JOIN OUR TEAM AS A PARKS & TRAILS SUPERINTENDENT!
This role is a highly responsible and professional position which plans, organizes, and directs the operations of multiple large acreage wilderness/conservation parks, parklands, natural areas, beaches, recreation facilities, and programs under the operating responsibility of a portion of the County (or department), supervisory responsibilities for 15+ staff, and coordinates with the other superintendents to assure continuity of department activities, policies and procedures.
Supervises the operation and maintenance of County parks, including staff, within the Parks and Trails Division. Responsible for the care of park site facilities and grounds including open space, picnic areas, shelters/pavilions, restrooms, fields, playgrounds, trails, parking lots, roadways, beaches, boat ramps, campgrounds, natural areas, other park infrastructures, lifeguard operations, signage, and landscaping. Directs special recreation programs and events and construction via specialized staff assigned to complete related projects and programs.
Assists in directing contracted work.
Performs inspections and, if needed, takes corrective action to ensure that park site operations and maintenance meet department standards, policies, and procedures. Schedules and coordinates work with vendors, contractors, and other agencies. Coordinates personnel schedules, maintenance and recreation program schedules, and major equipment assignments.
Provides liaison with other Superintendents and outside organizations by coordinating tasks, activities, maintenance, and recreation programs to avoid conflicts and to ensure efficiency. Investigates and resolves public complaints pertaining to the operations of parklands, trails, recreational facilities, and public programs.
Prepares budgetary and cost estimates for operational concerns, including construction, maintenance and recreation operations at park, trail, or facility. Makes recommendations on specifications for purchase of new equipment and supplies, and funding of natural resource and educational programs.
Interviews, hires, and evaluates, and if needed approves payroll, for full-time staff, part-time, and seasonal staff, instructors, contractors, and volunteers. May prepare and deliver presentations to community organizations, schools, and civic groups. Produce timely, professional and concise memorandums, reports and other job related documentation and correspondence.
Approves requisitions for supplies and equipment, and assumes administrative control of budgeted monies allocated to the position’s area of responsibility.
Maintains a variety of records, including cost accounting for maintenance and recreation operations. Prepares technical reports and correspondence as required.
Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of current grounds and structural maintenance, construction, leisure service trends, programming, and facility management techniques.
- Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public parks and recreation services.
- Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and monitor the work capabilities and progress of various staff and programs.
- Knowledge of Florida's ecosystems and land management techniques.
- Ability to select, train, and evaluate parks and recreation staff.
- Ability to evaluate new and proposed improvements to parks and recreation operational programs, maintenance and construction methods, and related equipment.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, community organizations, and the public.
- Ability to stimulate and develop community interest, support, and participation in parks and recreation related activities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to communicate effectively, using verbal, written and visual communication. Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
EDUCATION, TRAINING ANDEXPERIENCE:
