the mission of the office of the general counsel in the florida department of corrections (fdc) is to provide high-quality legal advice and representation to the department.

this position is not a telework position and is required to report to the fdc office in the area it serves.

job duties
  • paralegal support: provide paralegal assistance to chief legal counsel, executive senior attorney, and five senior attorneys in the human resources/community corrections.
  • litigation assistance: assist attorneys with discovery requests, scheduling hearings, mediations, and travel arrangements for personnel cases.
  • case management: maintain computer logs and tracking systems to capture case information, ensuring electronic and hard copy files are up-to-date.
  • case assignment: assign cases to attorneys, create electronic files, and log cases into the tracking system promptly.
  • inquiry response: respond to inquiries and provide assistance to department staff, outside agencies, judges, court personnel, attorneys, and private citizens regarding active litigation.
  • discovery review: review discovery requests, investigate subject matter, and prepare replies as designated by attorneys.
  • document redaction: review and redact records for personnel matters when needed and assist with other designated backup responsibilities.

  • must have experience redacting documents.
  • must be able to work with the office of general counsel's case tracking system and caseload database; compile status reports for attorneys on matters; assist with scheduling and calendaring deadlines; processing litigation documents; and must have experience with handling matters in state and federal courts.
  • must have good computer skills, working knowledge of microsoft word, excel, power point, office 365, outlook; and must have good oral and communication skills.
  • must have four (4) years of paralegal or legal secretary experience.
    • postsecondary education may substitute for up to 3 ½ years of the required experience
