Job Description:Licensed Optician/Optical Technician
Location: Sarasota, FL 34287
Job SummaryLicensed Opticians prepare and dispense lenses, spectacles, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other optical devices. They duplicate lenses accurately to power without prescription and, when board‑certified, may fill, fit, adapt, or dispense any soft contact lens prescription. They may also fill, fit, or dispense any extended wear or hard contact lens prescription as authorized by the prescribing physician or optometrist.
Essential Job Functions- Interpret prescriptions from ophthalmologists and optometrists.
- Collect eye measurements (pupillary distance, segment height, base curve, width, and thickness).
- Assist clients in selecting lenses and treatment options.
- Make appropriate lens material choices.
- Select frames fitting facial structure and prescription.
- Troubleshoot vision and eyewear concerns.
- Neutralize and inspect prescription lenses with a lensometer.
- Identify prescribed prism.
- Navigate insurance websites to clarify benefits and costs.
- Prepare orders for lab technicians.
- Adjust eyeglasses for proper fit.
- Repair broken frames.
- Educate clients on eyeglass and contact lens care.
- Track orders, prescriptions, and inventory.
- Adhere to laws, regulations, and contractual obligations.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Understand materials, methods, instruments, and equipment.
- Read, write, and perform mathematical calculations.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Multi‑task and manage time in a fast‑paced environment.
- Know progressive, non‑glare, polarized, and other lens options.
- Use a computer proficiently.
- Excessive walking, standing, bending, and stooping.
- Stand, sit, handle objects, and reach with hands and arms.
- Climb or balance, kneel, and crouch.
- Lift moderately heavy objects (50‑90 pounds).
- Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Full‑time. Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. (occasional 7:00 P.M. in specific locations). Occasional overtime. Saturdays 8:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. in specific locations.
TravelTravel and driving required for some locations.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- An associate degree in opticianry from an accredited institution or completion of a three‑year Florida apprenticeship program.
- Licensure in the State of Florida and a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Safe driving record.
- OR practiced opticianry in a state outside Florida and licensed outside Florida.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree.
