Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in radio‑teletype operations, sworn law enforcement, dispatching, forestry, firefighting or other public contact work.
- College education can substitute 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for the required experience.
- Valid class E driver license.
- Must be willing to travel occasionally for training and emergency response.
- Must live within thirty (30) miles of the headquarters at 865 Geddie Road, Tallahassee, Florida.
The duty officer supports fire suppression and emergency response operations. Key duties include:
- Dispatching crews, pilots and law enforcement to wildfires, smoke complaints and other incidents; operating communication equipment and coordinating with state, federal and local agencies.
- Managing burn authorizations across six counties, maintaining up‑to‑date maps and landowner information, and providing compliance support.
- Performing administrative functions: maintaining records, preparing reports, and updating Standard Operating Procedures.
- Serving as an active member of the Communications Center, handling incoming calls and relaying information to supervisors, crews and public media.
- Gathering and disseminating daily fire weather forecasts and observing unusual weather conditions for crews and stakeholders.
- Completing all required training and other related work assigned by the supervisor.
- Occasional travel for training and emergencies.
- Background screening including fingerprinting.
- Honest and authentic responses throughout the evaluation process.
- Use of AI tools for qualifying questions or interviews will be considered.
